Chapter Thirty-three

"Look, Governor, I am deeply honored by your invitation to dinner, but your men said this was urgent. I'm sorry. Dinner isn't urgent when there are so many injured that need my skills."

Eldon entered the governor's brightly lit entryway with Verity beside him and saw Brother Terrick addressing their host. His gray shirt and trousers were rumpled and brown bloodstains spread across the front. Eldon believed his clothes clean.

Terrick jerked around in surprise. "First Brother!" He rushed to kneel in front of Eldon, took his hand, and kissed it. "I had no idea you were here. I've been . . . concentrating."

Eldon smiled and patted his hand. "Rise, Brother. The governor told me what a good job you were doing."

Terrick got to his feet and brushed his unruly brown hair out of his face. "You've come a long way, and I . . . I know there is probably cause for it, but . . . couldn't you have sent someone else to deal with the problem?" Terrick's belief that Eldon was too old and fragile to travel was staggeringly deep.

Eldon gasped and stumbled back. Verity caught him before he fell.

Color blanched from Terrick's face, and he retreated across the room. "I'm sorry, First Brother. So sorry." He struggled to change his beliefs about Eldon.

Eldon straightened and sent him a clear picture of the ancient oak that could not be felled.

Terrick grabbed hold of the image and embraced it.

"Is something wrong?" The governor looked puzzled.

"Not at all," Eldon said. "We are very grateful you have invited us to dine with you. Please . . ." He gestured toward the hall from which the aroma of frying trout made Eldon's stomach grumble.

The governor led the way toward the dining room.

Terrick stayed where he was, staring at the floor and clutching his hands together.

Eldon put an arm around him and believed his hair into some semblance of order. "It's been a long time, Brother. Your travels have kept you away from Sanctuary."

"I . . . I do better when I'm alone."

Eldon nodded. "I know it's hard for you being around other shifters. You believe so strongly and are so sensitive to others' beliefs that are different from your own. But I need you, Terrick. Do you still have your sword?"

Terrick's head jerked up. "You know I gave up my life with the border guard when I came to Sanctuary. I don't fight anymore." He shuddered.

"But you kept the sword."

"It's a Truda blade." Terrick's hand strayed to his side though the sword did not hang there. "My grandfather was a Truda Sword before he married an Efrasian. I had to keep it."

"Of course you did." Eldon motioned Verity to follow the governor down the hall to the dining room, and nudged Terrick to come along with him behind her.

"I have to travel to the Westerland and deal with a new shifter that is disrupting things. You know I'm not welcome on the plains. There could be trouble. I was going to hire a swordsman to accompany us, but since you're here, I'd prefer you come instead .
